Description- Overview

The National Community Reinvestment Coalition (NCRC) was formed in 1990 by national, regional, and local organizations to develop and harness the collective energies of community reinvestment organizations from across the country to increase the flow of private capital into traditionally underserved communities. NCRC has grown to an association of more than 600 community-based organizations that promote access to basic banking services including credit and savings, to create and sustain affordable housing, job development and vibrant communities for America's working families.

Position Overview:

The Policy Intern will be a critical part of the Policy and Government Relations Department. The intern will be required to monitor legislation and regulatory rule makings and effectively communicate their findings. Additionally, the intern will attend congressional hearings, conferences, and other events that will offer both networking opportunities as well as demonstrate where they will be expected to work on his/her own under limited direction and produce results in a timely manner.

This is a rolling application, with new interns accepted each semester. Fall Semester interns can expect to be contacted by mid-August; Spring interns by mid-December; Summer interns by mid-April.

The stipend for this position is $300/month plus local commuting costs.

Essential Functions:

The Policy intern is primarily responsible for the following:

  • Monitor appropriate Senate and House Committee's for actions on any pending legislation; including but not limited to the House Financial Services Committee and the Senate Banking Committee, and to also monitor Federal Agencies for proposed rule makings
  • Review pending bills and Proposed Rulemakings, monitor all amendments, research the laws affected, and critically analyze the effects of these bills and rules on NCRC's goals and effectively communicate the results to others in the Department
  • Intern will be expected to help with  basic office functions, including scheduling, answering phones, sending and responding to emails, and other assignments as needed

Additional Responsibilities:

  • Research laws and regulations to support the Policy and Government Relations Department as needed
  • Represent NCRC at conferences, meetings, and other events, as assigned
  • Other duties as assigned by the Director of Policy and Government Relations


Analytical: Ability to effectively monitor pending bills and rulemakings, and ability to effectively research literature, laws, and regulations. Familiarity with Microsoft Office, specifically Excel is required.

Problem Solving: Ability to identify and resolve problems in a timely manner and gather and analyze information skillfully.

Communication: Ability to effectively communicate in writing, and to present complex information in an easily accessible format both verbally and in writing. Some basic understanding of the legislative and regulatory process preferred.

Leadership and Training: Able to speak with authority and represent the organization in a professional manner.

Planning/organizing: Prioritize and plan work activities, use time efficiently, be a self-starter, and develop realistic action plans.


  • Background in political science or policy analysis preferred
  • Strong research and writing skills with demonstration of critical thought and logic
  • Ability to work and interact in a fast-paced environment with diverse organizations and individuals
  • Education - upper class undergaduate or recent graduate status preferred
