Internship in Community Lawyering & Policy Innovation, Summer 2017
The Center for Popular Democracy

Location:
USA – Washington, DC, New York, NY

Description – Overview:

The Center for Popular Democracy (CPD) is a high-impact national organization based in New York City and DC with satellite offices in Boston, MA, Oakland, CA, and Chicago, IL that promotes equity, opportunity, and a dynamic democracy by partnering with grassroots organizations around the country to build community power and transform the state and local policy landscape. Working in the areas of immigrant rights and racial justice as well as economic and community justice, CPD provides legal and strategic support on state and local legislative campaigns that advance a pro-worker, pro-immigrant, racial justice agenda. We also collaborate with established and emerging grassroots groups as they develop and refine their community organizing methodology and internal management, fundraising, and communications infrastructure. We currently are engaged with 43 partners in 30 states, on a wide range of policy, research, organizing, and campaign-related projects.  Our team of seven attorneys and law graduates provides policy, legal, and strategic support on a wide array of legislative and administrative campaigns.

CPD is developing and moving cutting-edge policies in partnership with some of the most sophisticated community and labor organizations in the country.  Some of our current work includes:

  • Challenging discriminatory policing practices and policies;
  • Fighting for strong public schools and against the privatization of public education;
  • Advocating for local policies, like municipal IDs, that promote welcoming and inclusive communities and access to government and other services for immigrants and people of color;
  • Championing legal representation for immigrants who are detained and facing deportation;
  • Advancing the next-generation of worker justice policies, including fighting wage theft, winning minimum wage increases and the right to paid sick days, fighting fluctuating schedules and involuntary part-timing of work, and policies that facilitate worker organizing;
  • Developing innovative local policies to tackle climate change and its disparate impact on communities of color; and
  • Advocating for policies that expand the franchise and make it easier to vote.

CPD seeks talented, public interest-oriented 2Ls and 1Ls to participate in our summer Internship in Community Lawyering & Policy Innovation. Students will provide critically important support for CPD’s work in both issue areas through:

  • Legal research and analysis that supports development of viable policy options;
  • Policy research and analysis that identifies and evaluates approaches taken in jurisdictions across the country;

In addition, interns will conduct campaign research that informs strategy and produce related materials such as draft legislative language, proposal summaries, and op-eds.  Interns will be expected to work 40 hours/week and will be supervised directly by CPD’s staff.
